Google Now "Ok Google" setting turns your voice in skype into gibberish

I encountered a strange problem with Skype and Google Hangout on my Galaxy S4. My voice sounded like gibberish to the other party. Another Galaxy S4 in our home worked fine. Googling it finally revealed the culprit: Google Now!

The option in Google Now to detect "Ok Google" all the time is what breaks the sound capture in other apps. To turn it off, follow these steps:

  • Go into Google Now (the search box on the home screen)
  • Tap the menu button, and then tap Settings
  • Tap Voice
  • Tap "Ok Google" Detection
  • Un-select From any screen
  • Tap the Back button until you are back at the home screen, or just press the Home button
That fixed the problem for me on my Galaxy S4.

I hope that helps other folks with the same problem.
